Why Primary School Extra Maths Early On Prevents High School Burnout

For Brackenhurst & Alberton parents · 5 min read

Primary school child receiving extra maths support at Brackenkidz

Many high-school maths struggles don’t start in Grade 8 or 9. They start quietly in the Foundation and Intermediate Phase when small gaps in number sense, times tables or problem-solving are left unaddressed. By the time the workload intensifies, the child is already playing catch-up — and burnout follows.

The compounding effect of early gaps

Maths is sequential. A shaky understanding of place value or fractions in Grade 4 becomes a major obstacle when algebra arrives. Children who feel “bad at maths” early often develop anxiety that further reduces their willingness to practise.

Why after-school extra maths works better than crisis tutoring later

Short, consistent sessions while concepts are still fresh are far more effective (and less stressful) than intensive catch-up in high school. Small-group extra classes also give children the chance to ask questions they might not raise in a busy classroom.

What effective primary extra maths looks like

How Brackenkidz approaches it

Our extra Maths classes (R1 200 per month for 2 × 1-hour sessions) run in small groups and sit alongside supervised homework time. Because many of our learners are also in dual-medium aftercare, we can reinforce concepts across the week rather than in isolated lessons. High-school students are welcome too — the earlier the foundation is solid, the smoother Matric becomes.

If your primary-school child is already finding maths harder than it should be, or you simply want to keep them ahead of the curve, early extra support is one of the highest-leverage decisions you can make.
